About this tool

Background Remover strips the background from photos and leaves you with a transparent PNG. Drop in any JPG, PNG, or WebP image — the segmentation model identifies the foreground subject and generates an alpha mask. The result can be downloaded as a PNG with true transparency.

How it works: the tool uses the RMBG-1.4 model running through ONNX Runtime Web. Your image is resized to 1024×1024 pixels, processed through the neural network, and the resulting mask is applied to the original image at full resolution. Everything runs locally — your image never leaves your browser.

Ideal for product photos (white backgrounds become transparent), portrait cutouts, removing photo-bombers, and preparing images for compositing in design tools. Upload a product shot on a plain background and download a clean transparent PNG ready for your store or social media.

FAQ

How is this different from the Image Cropper?

Image Cropper lets you trim rectangular regions by adjusting crop handles. Background Remover uses AI segmentation to cut out the subject itself — it leaves you with an irregular, non-rectangular shape on a transparent background, which cropping alone cannot achieve.

Why does it take so long the first time?

The background removal model is about 176 MB and is downloaded once per browser session. After the initial download it stays in memory for subsequent images. Reloading the page will trigger a re-download.

What kind of images work best?

The model works best on images with a clear foreground subject against a contrasting background — product photos, portraits, objects on plain surfaces. Complex or busy backgrounds may produce artifacts around the edges.

Why PNG? Can I get JPEG?

JPEG does not support transparency channels. Background removal produces an image with see-through areas, which requires a format that supports alpha — PNG is the universal choice. WebP also supports transparency and can be converted after download.
